As an archipelago with 14 big and small islands off the coast of Ba Ria - Vung Tai province, Con Dao is known as a hidden island occupying much value and potential of tourism. Con Dao, also called Con Son Island, though is considered as an island paradise, it was once “hell on earth” for thousands of prisoners who was tortured and died during the French –and American-backed regimes. Right here, hundred thousands of Vietnamese patriots sacrificed for the sake of the national freedom and independence. Con Dao is an eloquent evidence for accusing cruelty, dictatorial regime of imperialism.

Referring to Con Dao, people often think of the hard labor cooler along with historical wartime monuments. So many people seem to forget beautiful beaches with clean blue water or wide paved path meandering around the beaches, secret forests with captivating diverse flora and fauna and the verdant islands with mountains, pepper, coconut, rice and species of animal.

Con Dao has rich natural resources. The largest island is Con Son with the island centre is Con Lon has a lot of areca with big fruits and red-like-ochre pip. Small and big bamboo islets have bamboos’ white big trunks as canes. There’s a large number of precious pearl in Oyster islet. Egg islet is the home of several kinds of seagull. Especially, Seven Edges Islet, the second largest island, owes the beach which is extremely clean and green. The whole island is covered with virgin lush forest canopies. This is also home for hundreds of sea turtles to breed every year. Here, the blue color of the sea blends with the green of the mountains make up a spectacular natural picture. Women islet is several hundred meters from Con Lon with the 321m-hight mount and huge stone of women shape. For people who love to explore nature, Con Dao National Park is an ideal destination. It covers nearly 6,000ha of the land and 14,000ha of the water area. Ecosystem here is a hidden treasure which isn’t still completely discovered. Intimate relationship among coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangroves has created a favorable environment for sea creatures to live and survive.

Located at the area of Asian equatorial climate which is hot and humid, Con Dao has greatly abundant and diversified ecosystem. Con Dao forest is lush luxuriant with many kinds of precious wood such as Litsea glutinosa, Chukrasia tabularis, Hopea odorata, orange tree, Homalomena, etc. Besides, there are many kinds of animals such as weasel, squirrel, varan, monkey, deer, forest bird, especially the ebony squirrel with black body is not found elsewhere in the country. This island also occupies many are rare and valuable birds such as the bird of blue face, sea swallow, etc. Tourists coming here will have chance to enjoy much valuable kinds of seafood such as lobster, hang fish, giong fish, shark, dolphin, shark, Holothurian, turtle, Hawksbill, etc. Not only strengh on sea, forest resources, Con Dao but also has huge potential in agriculture with high value products as pepper, coconut, medicinal plants, or in pisciculture, which make this island reputed and attractive tourism place to domestic and foreign tourists.
