Halong Bay - an outstanding picturesque landscape situated in Quang Ninh Province, Vietnam, is famed for its mountains, water, and thousands of caves and grottoes. Just imagine two thousands or more islands rising from the emerald green waters in the Gulf of Tonkin, you will have a vision of this breath-taking beauty. Halong, which literally means ‘where the dragon descends into the sea’, is also claimed by legend to be created by great dragons from the mountains.
Being recognized as World Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 1994 and listed in the New 7 Wonders in 2012, Halong Bay has many links to the olden times of Vietnam. For instance, there are such celebrated geographical sites as Van Don (site of an ancient commercial port), Poem Mountain (with engravings of many poems about emperors and other famous historical figures), and Bach Dang River (the location of two fierce naval battles fought against foreign aggressors).
Coming to Halong Bay, travelers can take a scenic cruise. You will see the dimly loomed ranges of lime karsts in the thin veil of morning, the crystal turquoise water mirrors image of the islands in the distance. Travelers will come across the floating houses of the residents, the crowded boat go back and forth across the bay. All these things surely can make you feel enjoyable.
Halong possesses a gigantic cave system, each cave has its own beauty and the stories closely attached to. Pay a visit to Thien Cung (Heavenly Palace) Grotto which is located in the southwest side of the bay. You also can come to Dau Go (Driftwood) Grotto where remains an engraved stone stele ordered by the Emperor Khai Dinh when he came here in 1917. An abundance of other caves and grottoes which is well worth visiting such as: Bo Nau (Pelican Cave), Trinh Nu (Virgin Cave), Sung Sot (Amazing Cave), Quang Hanh Grotto, etc.
Thanks to thousands of islands on the bay, Halong is the most famous place for kayaking in Vietnam. The water is cool, the current is fine, and the airstream is not too strong, that makes an ideal condition for sea-kayaking.
Halong tourism in particular and Quang Ninh tourism in general not only let travelers have sightseeing the vast sky and enormous ocean but also savor many excellent culinary specialties with salty flavor of the sea. Visitors must be excited when served sea snails, squid-sausages or special liquor named “Ngan - Arca Wine”. These dishes can be found anywhere along the shore from Quang Ninh to Hai Phong, but nowhere else has the same level of deliciousness like in Ha Long.
