Kep, Kep Travel Guide, Kep Cambodia

Kep is a coastal tourist city located 173 kilometers to the southwest of Phnom Penh. This is a small city which has beach suitable for swimming, about 1,000 meters long and no white sand like in Sihanoukville. However, Kep keeps a large amount of marine resources.

Quick Facts:

  • Location: southwest of Phnom Penh
  • Status: Province of Cambodia
  • Area: 336 km2
  • Population: 40,280 people (2009)
  • Climate: tropical climate
  • Time zone: Cambodia (UTC+7)

The city was founded in 1908 during the French colonial period. During Sangkum Reastr Niyum mode, Kep was renovated into a beautiful seaside resort in the 1960s. The name of Kep is originated from a French word meaning “cape” and refers to a legend of the Khmer people.

Kep possesses blue sky, soft sand and the gentle sound of waves pounding the shore. The crabs are digging sand, the shells are scattered around to form a perfect picture of Kep’s coast. Kep is a combination of beauty derived from both Asia and Europe, Asian and French culinary, clear waters and white sands of a tropical sea.

Coming to Kep, tourists can walk or drive around Kep’s mountains for the great sea views as well as nice forest. You can easily explore this town with ancient villas, a busy crab market on coastal line and a lot more seaside stuff. When you are tired or lazy, just lie on the beautiful sandy beach of Koh Tonsay (Rabbit Island) which is 30 minutes off from the Kep coast. The sea in Koh Island is shallow and has a long slope, making this place great for swimming. At the sea bottom area, tourists can discover an attractive range of corals, sea animals and plants.

For those who are interested in royal life, they can visit the former King Sihanouk’s mansion on top of the hill as well as enjoy the troupe of monkeys that hang about in the forest bordering the villa. Take some time to discover the Tek Chou waterfalls - a picnic area which is popular with the locals on the weekend. This place has food and refreshing dips in the water that promises to bring tourists fresh trip. The residents are very friendly, optimistic and keen on ensuring visitors to enjoy the beauty of their country.

In the evening, visitors can walk on the grass, enjoying the fragrance of the frangipani tree, or go watching the sun set on the sea. Although Kep is a small town, its cuisine is quite good. It is well-known for fresh seafood, especially crab. You can buy crab at a very nice price, thanks to a certain restaurant for processing and then enjoy the delicious dishes on shore. One of the local specialties is crab with pepper and lemon - a tasty mixture of sugary, sour and spicy.
