Sihanoukville, Sihanoukville Travel Guide, Sihanoukville Cambodia

Sihanoukville is one of the most famous beach towns in Cambodia, with white sand beaches stretching for miles, numerous picturesque islands, its cozy atmosphere and tropical clear and warm water. The town was named Sihanoukville to commemorate the King who fought for the freedom of Cambodia. This is also a tourist center in Southern Cambodia among other landmarks such as Kampot, Kep, Koh Kong and many more.

Quick Facts:

  • Location: Southern Cambodia
  • Status: province of Cambodia
  • Area: 868 km²
  • Population: 199.902 people (2008)
  • Climate: tropical climate with two seasons – wet and dry

The port town Sihanoukville was established not long ago – for more than half a century that makes Sihanoukville a young town, urban and international than most other places. Today it is increasingly becoming a sea town and is a tourist attraction, serving domestic tourists in the weekends as well as a growing number of foreign visitors. The town is located near the Gulf of Thailand, possessing a life pace very comfortable and unhurried. Sihanoukville gives visitors a completely different look and feel compared to most of other towns in Cambodia.

To get an overview on the town, you can climb a small hill of Wat Leu to get sights of the entire town. Wat Krom is another place of interest as this is a new temple that was built after the old one being destroyed by the Khmer Rouge Regime. Not far from the town there are also several attractive destinations such as the Ream National Park and the Kbal Chhay waterfall. Spend some time to take a look at the Independence Square that has an open meeting hall on Ekareach Street, across a small park containing a small shrine and the Independence Monument. This is the monument representing Cambodia's independence from foreign invasion.

To many travelers, the main reason to visit is the beach of Sihanoukville. Sihanoukville beaches are not as crowded as in Thailand, though there can be many people in weekends and holidays. But unlike many other beaches in Southeast Asia being awash with garbage, Sihanoukville beaches are very clean. There are many beautiful beaches that can’t be missed such as Ochheuteal Beach, Victory Beach, Serendipity Beach, etc.

Coming to Sihanoukville, you will occasionally encounter cows roaming on the road; warm smiles and even curious eyes of the locals when meeting foreigners. And its chain of restaurants, motels and hotels will surely meet your requirements. This is a proper occasion to settle down on the beach and enjoy delicious seafood, have a party at the bar or just lie down and have relaxation.

Ranked after Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville serves some of the best local and foreign dishes in Cambodia. Qualified ingredients, meticulous preparation, sophisticated decoration are the unique characteristics of Sihanoukville cuisine. Its highlights are the fresh seafood from the ocean: the giant crab and shrimps, marine fish and squid. All of those great foods can be found in any restaurants scattered along the coast. Meals which are prepared in barbecue style are also particularly popular. Some well-liked restaurants that you can visit: Angkor Beach Bar where serves pizza & pastas in daytime and acts as a full bar at night; Aqua Resort features in a range of both Western and Khmer foods; Holiday Palace Hotel that provides tourists with a great selection cuisine of China, Thailand and Western countries as well as offers a full service casino.
