Boat Racing Festival is the longest and most ebullient festival in Laos. This annual festivals takes place in nationwide and lasts for 6 weeks (from the end of August to the beginning of October). Right when Buddhist Lent ends, communities along the Mekong River start holding boat races to choose out the best teams.

Traditionally, the last race is hold at Ban Xieng Ngeun located thirty kilometers far from Luang Prabang. Interestingly, before the race, there is a performance of home-made rockets to celebrate the last and the most dramatic race.
The last race includes two best teams chosen out by races before. There are about fifty boatmen on each boat racing on the river of few hundreds meters long. During the race, the crowd along the river always applause and encourage making a frenetic and bustling atmosphere.
Boat Racing Festival is an opportunity for facilitating domestic trade and commerce. In addition, this festival is also a chance for people enjoying community-based activities together.
